Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry announced on Thursday that Meghan McCain, an MSNBC contributor, columnist for the Daily Beast, and daughter of U.S. Senator John McCain, is joining its Leadership Committee.
McCain, who spent much of her life on the campaign trail, is also known for her 2010 memoir, “Dirty Sexy Politics.” In addition to advocating for the freedom to marry, McCainhas been outspoken on women's issues, social issues, and the diversity of the GOP.
“I’m thrilled to join the Young Conservatives for the Freedom to Marry, who believe, as I do, that we don’t have to choose between conservatism and marriage for all committed couples,” McCainsaid. “I look forward to spreading the message that the tenets of family, personal freedom and responsibility point the way toward a GOP that fully embraces the freedom to marry.”
Momentum on marriage is steadily increasing among Americans, including those who identify as conservative and Republican. Recent polling shows that 49% of Republicans between the ages of 18 and 29 support the Freedom to Marry.
